Statement from The Center: DOJ position on Workplace Discrimination

Today the United States Department of Justice argued in court that federal civil rights law does not protect employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation. Coming just a day after the President of the United States declared that transgender individuals were not suited to serve in the United States military, this is a clear slap in the face to every member of the LGBT community. We stand in solidarity with the director of the American Civil Liberties Union LGBT and HIV Project, who called this step by the DOJ a “gratuitous and extraordinary attack on LGBT people’s civil rights,” and with the Human Rights Campaign, which said “today's filing is a shameful retrenchment of an outmoded interpretation that forfeits faithful interpretation of current law to achieve a politically-driven and legally specious result.” We cannot remain silent while the Trump Administration attempts to legalize discrimination and reverse decades of progress toward a [...]

Statement from The Center re Transgender Service Members

We are proud of all transgender patriots who have served and who are currently serving our country. They deserve our respect and gratitude. This is simply a blatant and disgraceful display of bigotry. Just over a year ago, the Pentagon lifted the ban preventing transgender individuals from openly serving in the military. Today there are 15,000 transgender service members in the US Military. In spite of their honorable service to their country, they are potentially at risk. We believe society should be moving forward, not backward, and we demand that the administration reverse this misguided decision. How can you support the transgender community? Contact the chair and ranking members of the Senate and House Committee on Armed Services and demand that they take action to stop Trump’s Ban on Transgender Military Service. Features Live Entertainment, Special Guest Speaker and awards honoring community leaders DENVER, CO—Jokers Jewels & Justice, the GLBT Community Center of Colorado’s signature fundraising event, will take place Thursday, February 23 at the Brown Palace Hotel, 321 17th Street. The event benefits The Center’s Training and Legal Programs. The evening starts off with cocktails and a silent auction at 5:30 pm followed by dinner, entertainment, a live auction and awards at 7:00 pm.
