Individualized Support for Older Adults

About

Older adults in the LGBTQ community can often find themselves increasingly isolated from social support when aging into care centers and assisted living facilities. The Center's SAGE of the Rockies program developed the Friendly Visitor and Phone-a-Friend programs to address this need. Volunteers are matched with an older adult in the program to provide regular support, friendship, and advocacy to the individual.

Friendly Visitor and Phone a Friend
In-Person Visits with Older Adults:

Friendly Visitor

The SAGE of the Rockies Friendly Visitor program is an outreach program that provides weekly visits to LGBTQ older adults (50+) residing in care centers or independent or assisted living communities who would benefit from friendship and support.

It's easy to participate! Request a Friendly Visitor volunteer through our web form to get matched with a Friendly Visitor volunteer. Once an individual is set up with the program, a volunteer set up a time and date to begin regular visits.

Weekly Calls for Older Adults:

Phone-A-Friend

The SAGE of the Rockies Phone-A-Friend program provides older adults (60+) who wish to be connected to a volunteer, but find it challenging to leave home on a regular basis. Participants are matched with a volunteer with similar interests for a friendly, weekly phone conversation and check-in.

The process is simple! Request a Phone-a-Friend volunteer through our web form to get matched with a Phone-A-Friend volunteer. Once an individual is set up with the program, a volunteer set up a prearranged time and date to begin calling. Phone calls typically range from 20-60 minutes and are a great way to stay socially connected to the larger community.

Volunteers Needed

The Center is looking for dedicated, caring volunteers to participate in the SAGE of the Rockies' Friendly Visitor and Phone-a-Friend programs. Volunteers should enjoy people and have an interest in reaching out to an older adult that is socially isolated. They should also be compassionate, caring listeners who can make a weekly commitment to the program.

If you are interested in getting involved with either of these programs, visit our volunteer page for more information or to apply.
