The Center is thinking about changing our organization's name, and we’d like to gather input on the public on several options that are under the consideration.

Why a Name Change?

While you may know us as “The Center,” technically our name is registered with the IRS as “The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Colorado,” which is, well, kind of a mouthful. The long name is hard to remember and often causes confusion among the public, plus it makes searching for us on sites like Guidestar or Colorado Gives Day more difficult than it needs to be.

Also, times change. We are one of just a few agencies nationwide that still list GLBT instead of LGBT, and this is a good time to look at alternative possibilities for a name that would better reflect our community and our work.

So, without further ado…

How to Vote

There are four options currently under consideration:

  • The LGBT Community Center of Colorado: Admittedly, this isn’t a huge change from our current name, but this option updates it from GLBT to come in-line with the current common vernacular of “LGBT.”
  • The LGBT Center of Colorado: Many people already omit the word “community” from our name, and making it official would shorten the name considerably and be easier to remember, while still making it clear what our organization is all about.
  • The LGBTQ Center of Colorado: Our community is diverse and constantly evolving, and including the umbrella-term “Q” in the name is more reflective of the diversity our community's gender identities and sexual orientations.
  • The Center on Colfax: Like The Center on Halstead in Chicago, this options avoids the use any LGBTQ+ acronym all together, while highlighting our geographic location at the same time. This would allow our messaging and resource materials to change along with our community without creating a need to update the organization's name.
